Formula 1 is to continue to serve in Miami in the spring: This also has to do with the national and international sporting calendar
The Miami Grand Prix is being hailed as a great success on the part of Formula 1 – and that despite the fact that they didn’t even make a profit on the premiere edition of the mega-event! But the race is regarded as the final breakthrough for the premier class in the USA. And it is to keep its calendar slot in May in the future as well.
The date could be “a week or two in the other direction, but it would be around this time every year,” stresses Tom Garfinkel, managing partner of the Miami Grand Prix, speaking to ‘Autosport’.
“We have the tennis tournament [the Miami Open], so that’s kind of the calendar date. It could be a week earlier or later depending on what’s going on that year. But it will be right around that time,” Garfinkel affirms.
The Formula One race around Hard Rock Stadium in Miami will be integrated into the national and international sports calendar. The American football club Miami Dolphins play their home games in the stadium itself. The regular season in the NFL traditionally takes place between the beginning of September and the beginning of January.
Tennis and NFL give Formula One slot in Miami
In addition, the men’s tennis professional association ATP’s troop comes to the metropolis on the Florida coast every spring for the Miami Open. The tournament usually gets a slot between mid-March and early April. For Formula 1, this results in a time slot between mid-April and mid-August for the Miami Grand Prix.
The Formula 1 premiere around the Hard Rock Stadium was sold out, with more than 80,000 spectators gathering around the track on race Sunday. In addition, the premier class achieved its highest TV ratings ever in the USA with this race.
A third US round will be added to the calendar next year with the race in Las Vegas. “I think it’s great that there are three races in the US,” says Garfinkel. “It’s great to have one in Las Vegas. I’m looking forward to a night race on a Saturday. It’s fantastic for Formula One, motorsport in America, and we welcome it. “
For Las Vegas, a night race is scheduled for Thanksgiving weekend. Thanksgiving is similar to our Thanksgiving holiday, but is a bank holiday in the US and always takes place on the fourth Thursday in November. The race in the gambling metropolis also takes the Formula 1 drivers along the famous Las Vegas Strip.
Miami, however, is the US venue with the longest contract period in Formula 1, running for ten years, while the Circuit of the Americas in Austin is only tied to the premier class for five years. The organisers in Las Vegas have only signed a three-year contract, starting in 2023, with Formula 1.
