Mia Rusthen’s family gives update: Still in a coma, but out of danger

The Norwegian is still in an induced coma after her serious crash in Misano – but doctors have given the all-clear – family at her side

The first race weekend of the new Women’s World Championship (WorldWCR) in Misano has been overshadowed by a serious crash. In Saturday’s race, Mia Rusthen crashed in the finishing bend

The Norwegian lost consciousness and was taken to the Bufalini Trauma Center in Cesena for further treatment after first aid at the track. There, Rusthen was placed in an induced coma and operated on Saturday.

“She underwent surgery to relieve the pressure in her head and eliminate a hemorrhage,” said an initial update from her family. “The doctor is very positive and happy with the result. The pressure in her brain is stable and her vital signs are stable.”

The 22-year-old remains in an induced coma in intensive care at Bufalini Hospital. A further update from her family late on Monday evening gives cause for hope, as Rusthen is out of danger.

“She has her loved ones around her. This gives her and us as a family strength,” her family wrote on Facebook. “Mia is still in a coma, but the doctors report that her life is fortunately no longer in danger.”

“She is stable and showing good vital signs. We are now working on a plan to transfer her home to a hospital in Norway as soon as she is stable enough for air transportation. It’s still too early to say anything concrete.”

“But we hope that her good physical condition and tenacity will help her get through this too.” The family would also like to thank the global motorsport community for their great sympathy.

Rusthen started her racing career in 2016 and drove her first season in Norwegian junior cups in 2017. In 2018, she was invited to take part in the selection for the Red Bull Rookies Cup, but did not make it into the field.

In 2021, she took the step into international racing and competed in the IDM Supersport 300 class. She was supported by Yamaha. In 2022, Rusthen collected her first IDM points. In 2023, she competed in the Women’s European Championship, which she finished in tenth place
