Meyer’s European journey continues: Ex-Schalker moves to Cyprus

Just recently, former international Max Meyer announced his departure from FC Luzern. Now the 28-year-old has found a new club: He is going to APOEL Nicosia in Cyprus

After it was announced a few weeks ago that former Schalke and Cologne player Max Meyer would be leaving FC Luzern after two years, his new employer has now been confirmed: the 28-year-old midfielder is moving to APOEL Nicosia in Cyprus. He will also play in the Champions League qualifiers with the record champions, in which he has not played since his time at Schalke. Should he qualify, Meyer would make his first appearance in the top flight since the 2014/15 season, in which he has played 16 times to date.

Meyer left his boyhood club Schalke 04 for England in 2018, but was never really happy in his two-and-a-half years at Crystal Palace. It was a similar story for the former top talent at 1. FC Köln, Fenerbahce Istanbul in the Turkish Süper Lig and FC Midtjylland in Denmark.

In Lucerne, Meyer was also captain for a time

It was only at FC Luzern in the Swiss Super League that Meyer found his fortune again. In his first season, the four-time international scored eleven goals in 29 league games. Before his second season in central Switzerland, he was even named captain, but the armband was taken away from him again during the course of the season.

The club withdrew an offer to extend his contract after Meyer hesitated, as he publicly revealed a few weeks ago. Nevertheless, in his last game for the FCL, he scored a penalty in the 2-1 defeat against Lausanne-Ouchy and was able to say a conciliatory farewell.

Now Meyer’s journey continues in Cyprus. His new club APOEL Nicosia won the championship title last year, just ahead of AEK Larnaca, who are level on points. With Anastasios Donis, he also meets a familiar name from the Bundesliga at his new club: The Greek striker played for VfB Stuttgart between 2017 and 2019
