Men’s doubles successful in Paris – out for Kerber doubles

The German Tennis Federation can hope for glorious Olympic success. The singles protagonists Angelique Kerber and Alexander Zverev are not the only ones who can flirt with a medal

The two German men’s tennis doubles teams are through to the quarter-finals of the Olympic competition at the Summer Games in France. The Davis Cup duo of Tim Pütz and Kevin Krawietz defeated Frenchmen Gael Monfils and Edouard Roger-Vasselin 6:3, 6:1 in the second round. The German pairing is seeded second and is one of the favorites.

Jan-Lennard Struff and Dominik Koepfer surprisingly reached the round of the best eight, particularly due to their difficult opening draw. After their unexpected victory over the Croatian Tokyo Olympic champions Nikola Mektic and Mate Pavic, they held their own against the Portuguese Nuno Borges and Francisco Cabral 6:2, 6:2. Struff had previously withdrawn from his singles match in the second round due to hip problems.

Kerber hopes only in singles

Angelique Kerber will only continue her career in singles. After reaching the quarter-finals, the former world number one in doubles with Laura Siegemund lost 2:6, 3:6 in the first round against the two Brits Heather Watson and Katie Boulter.

Kerber said after winning her match against Canada’s Leylah Fernandez that she had not thought about the possibility of withdrawing from the doubles because of her chances of winning a medal in the singles. Kerber will end her tennis career after the Summer Games
