Indian Wells – After quickly losing the top spot, Russian tennis pro Daniil Medvedev hopes to return to number one in the world rankings.
“I will try my best, on the practice court, in matches, at Grand Slams, the Masters Series, to win as many tournaments as possible and get as many points as possible to be number one for a long time,” Medvedev said after his third-round exit in Indian Wells against Frenchman Gael Monfils.
As a result, Medvedev will be replaced at the top of the world rankings again by Novak Djokovic at the beginning of next week. The 26-year-old only took over the number one spot from the Serb on 28 February. Djokovic will not be competing in Indian Wells because the 34-year-old has still not been vaccinated against the corona virus and was therefore not allowed to enter the USA.
With a successful showing at the Masters 1000 event in Miami starting next week, Medvedev could regain the lead in the rankings. “Of course I want to hold the spot as long as possible,” said the US Open champion. But it was better “to be number one for a week than not to get there at all,” Medvedev said.
