McTominay double in stoppage time as Manchester United defeat Brentford

Manchester United turned what they thought was a certain defeat into a last-minute win inside four minutes thanks to substitute Scott McTominay, ending their little drought of two straight must-win defeats for the time being.

With Maguire and Evans in place of Varane and Hannibal, Manchester United entered Matchday 8 after the Red Devils suffered a bitter 3-2 Champions League defeat to Galatasaray Istanbul on Tuesday.

Jensen capitalises on United’s string of errors

United started cautiously and had a lot of sand in their gears, especially on the offensive. Although the Red Devils showed good approaches time and again, there were no scoring opportunities worth mentioning. Instead, the hosts invited Brentford in. After a fatal Casemiro miss and a failed clearing attempt by Lindelöf, it was Jensen who beat Onana to give the visitors a 1-0 lead (26th minute).

Rashford closes in

The Red Devils failed to respond immediately and it was not until more than ten minutes after conceding that Rashford created some goal-scoring danger after the poorly-performing Englishman got the better of Wissa (37). Erik ten Hag took Casemiro off at the break and brought on Eriksen, who at least put the Bees on a bit of alert with his long-range shot in the 53rd minute. United continued to have more possession, but did far too little with it, and the Red Devils were simply too unimaginative offensively.

Small chances by Garnacho (76th) or Bruno Fernandes (78th) did not cause Strakosha any problems. Instead, Onana had to intervene twice and prevent the preliminary decision. First, United’s backman made a strong save against Maupay (83rd), and a few moments later Onana was again on the alert against Nörgaard (84th).

McTominay turns the game in injury time

In the six minutes of stoppage time it looked as if Brentford would continue to defend their three points cleanly, but the Bees had not reckoned with substitute McTominay. The Scot first equalised (90.+3) and then headed home in the seventh minute of stoppage time to turn the game completely around (90.+7).

Manchester United host Sheffield United after the international break (21 October, 9pm). Brentford welcome Burnley a few hours earlier (4pm).
