Martial arts superstar Conor McGregor has suffered a court defeat in the wake of rape allegations. The 36-year-old is denying all accusations.
Mixed martial arts fighter Conor McGregor has suffered a legal defeat in a civil case following rape allegations. A court in Dublin has upheld a woman’s claim for damages against the Irishman, and McGregor must pay the woman €248,603.
The victim claims that McGregor “brutally raped and abused” her.
McGregor shakes his head
McGregor shook his head at the jury’s verdict in the High Court. The 36-year-old said he had had consensual sex with the woman.
The crime is said to have taken place in 2018 in a hotel in the Irish capital. The woman stated that she had suffered severe bruises and was suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder.
She also claimed that McGregor threatened to kill her. McGregor is said to have choked her several times. The woman’s lawyer accused McGregor of being angry about losing the fight and taking it out on the woman. McGregor denied the allegations. “This is one of many lies,” he said.
McGregor announces appeal
In a statement on platform X, he announced that he would appeal. “I am disappointed that the jury did not hear all the evidence,” wrote the Irish sports star.
The standard of proof in a civil case is lower because a case is decided on the basis of a balance of probabilities.
McGregor is one of the biggest stars in the history of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) in mixed martial arts.
