After a long wait, UFC President Dana White announces the time, place and setting of the fight between Conor McGregor and Michael Chandler
It’s been almost three years since the biggest star in combat sports last stood in the Octagon – now the date for Conor McGregor’s long-awaited comeback fight has finally been set!
UFC President Dana White has announced that McGregor will face Michael Chandler in the main event of the UFC 303 pay-per-view on June 29 in Las Vegas. The event is the highlight of the UFC’s annual international fight week.
McGregor had already announced on January 1 that he would fight Chandler on that date, but it was White’s announcement that made it official.
Last year, McGregor and Chandler already competed against each other as coaches on the reality show “The Ultimate Fighter”, now they meet as athletes
Conor McGregor hasn’t fought since 2021
Irishman McGregor is the biggest star in the history of the mixed martial arts organization. But: The 35-year-old hasn’t fought since July 2021, when he broke his left leg in a fight against Dustin Poirier
The former featherweight and lightweight champion’s sporting brilliance had already waned considerably: Since 2016, “The Notorious” has only fought four times in the UFC and also only scored one victory. The blockbuster boxing match against Floyd Mayweather and numerous scandals involving McGregor’s off-stage behavior made bigger headlines during this time.
The 37-year-old opponent Chandler has also not been at the top of his game of late: he has lost three of his past four fights, most recently in November 2022, also against Poirier.
