MBC springs a surprise: Bayern stumbles in Weißenfels

The MBC pulls off the sensation. Weißenfels celebrates a historic victory with a hard-fought 79:75 win over Bayern Munich, bringing the German champions to their knees.

What looked like a clear victory for the favorites quickly developed into a real thriller. Munich, back on the court just 40 hours after their EuroLeague victory over Paris, looked tired and made too many mistakes, while the SYNTAINICS MBC delivered a sacrificial performance in front of its home crowd. Ty Brewer in particular stood out, leading his team to victory with 22 points (9/13 FG) as top scorer.

MBC with fighting spirit, Bayern with mistakes

The game started quite well for FC Bayern, who took control early with an 8-2 run. But the home side did not let themselves be shaken off. With strong defense and targeted threes, the Wolves stayed in contention and even took the lead in the second quarter. At halftime, the home side led 40:35, and an upset was on the cards.

Munich applied more pressure after the break and fought its way back into the game with buckets from outside by Nick Weiler-Babb (19, 8 assists, 7 rebounds), but a series of turnovers (21 in total) repeatedly disrupted its rhythm. Bayern ran into difficulties in the third period in particular and was even nine points behind at one stage (55:64). Despite their individual quality, they were not able to turn the game around, as the MBC repeatedly counterattacked with clever actions.

Thriller in the final quarter

The last few minutes were not for the faint-hearted: the reigning champions came dangerously close again, but the MBC repeatedly scored at the decisive moment. When Weiler-Babb narrowly missed the chance to equalize at 75:75, Weißenfels seized the opportunity and secured a narrow victory with a buzzer-beater by Michael Devoe.

Bavaria’s second defeat of the season – MBC celebrates

For Munich, it was the second defeat of the season and they have learned that you can’t afford to show any weakness against supposed outsiders – especially when you’re in the middle of a busy schedule between the EuroLeague and the BBL. The SYNTAINICS MBC, on the other hand, can celebrate after their first victory against FC Bayern in eight years.

The FC Bayern basketball team will continue in the EuroLeague against Olympiakos Piräus next Friday (8:05 p.m.), before facing the FIT/One Würzburg Baskets in the BBL two days later. The Wolves will be guests in Hamburg on Saturday.
