Max Verstappen has no desire to race in Formula E, but still follows the series with interest – driver happy about opportunities for other drivers
Max Verstappen says he has no ambitions to drive in Formula E at some point, but he enjoys watching the races in the electric series – also because many of his friends and companions are racing in it, such as his compatriot Nyck de Vries, who returned to Formula E after his Formula 1 retirement
“What I like about Formula E is that there are a lot of good drivers,” says the three-time world champion. “The competition is pretty high, and of course a few friends of mine drive there too, so I always keep an eye on it.”
“It’s not a championship I’d like to race in myself in the future,” he says, but he does enjoy watching. “I always enjoy it because the talent in the series is very high, and that also makes it exciting to watch,” says the Dutchman.
With Stoffel Vandoorne, Jean-Eric Vergne, Sebastien Buemi, Lucas di Grassi Pascal Wehrlein and Nyck de Vries, six former Formula 1 drivers will be competing in the championship in the 2024 season, as well as up-and-coming talents such as champion Jake Dennis, Maximilian Günther and Mitch Evans, for whom the Formula 1 dream has not yet come true.
“It’s great to have a series that gives drivers an opportunity who can’t be in Formula 1,” says Sergio Perez. “It’s just another series where they can earn money and live their passion.”
“I think as a championship ourselves, we have to respect what they are focusing on and I think they are doing a very good job,” said the Mexican.
Carlos Sainz is also a fan of Formula E and is “just happy that the series exists” – for the same reason as Perez. “There are drivers who didn’t make it into Formula 1, but who have the talent to drive at a similar level to the 20 in Formula 1,” says the Spaniard.
“And this series simply gives them an opportunity to live their passion and fight with each other. I also have good friends there who I’ve competed against in different series, and it’s great that they have this opportunity,” says the Ferrari driver. “And the racing is good too. I’m happy that it exists. “
