Max Verstappen still refuses to appear in the Netflix series Drive to Survive directly – Why he has lost the desire to do so
Formula 1 World Champion Max Verstappen is staying true to his line of not appearing in the Netflix series Drive to Survive. In his opinion, it was “ruined after the first season. “
Drive to Survive is credited with a large part of Formula One’s current success around the globe, but especially in the United States of America. After all, the format is reaching a whole new audience.
Red Bull driver Max Verstappen, however, will not appear directly in this season. He already let it be known last year that he did not want to be interviewed because, in his opinion, rivalries would be artificially created and things would generally be exaggerated.
“They have invented rivalries where there are none,” Verstappen told ‘AP’ last October. “That’s why I decided not to be part of it and not to give any more interviews.”
The fourth season will be released this Friday, 11 March. It relies mainly on interviews with team boss Christian Horner in the title battle between Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton in Red Bull matters.
Verstappen, meanwhile, has no plans to revise his decision from last year: “I will not change my decision. In my opinion, it was already ruined after the first season. I’m down to earth and want to stick to facts without artificially inflating anything. “
“I get that it has to be that way for Netflix. It’s true for everything that’s on there. It’s not my thing. I’ll probably watch it to see how much they’re exaggerating again now. Maybe I’ll watch other documentaries on Netflix. “
Sainz agrees with Verstappen, but stays on board
Verstappen appeared in the first three seasons of Drive to Survive, giving straight interviews. The first season put a big focus on the Dutchman and his then teammate Daniel Ricciardo, including their accident in Azerbaijan in 2018.
Ferrari driver Carlos Sainz agrees with Verstappen about exaggerating rivalries. He thinks that his rivalry with Riccciardo at McLaren has been exaggerated: “They went a bit too far there. But I think Netflix is aware of that and they’re learning from their mistakes.”
Still, he wants to stay on board: “I think they’ll re-evaluate that and maybe in the future try to present things more realistically. But even with this mistake, if you want to call it that, I think Netflix is a good thing for the sport, for me and for Formula One as a whole. So I will continue to perform there if they want me to be there.”
Fernando Alonso is ambivalent: “So far I’ve had other commitments with Amazon Prime Video. I haven’t been able to do too much outside of that. It’s a good thing for the sport, but we are already extremely involved with our teams and sponsors. So it’s not easy to give them time. I think we already give a lot of insight into the paddock. But off the track, I wouldn’t be a big fan of it. “
