The nephew of rally legend Colin McRae, Max Mcrae, wants to compete in the WRC soon – He hopes to make his debut in the 2023 season
It would be the third generation in the World Rally Championship (WRC): The nephew of rally legend Colin McRae, Max McRae, is currently fighting his way through the junior classes to one day make it to the top of rallying. The 18-year-old wants to make the jump to the World Championship as early as the 2023 season.
Currently, the Australian is working hard to make the step into the Junior WRC (JWRC). Most recently, McRae tested a car that will be used in the junior class. The son of former WRC driver Alister McRae and nephew of WRC champion Colin McRae, who died in 2007, was allowed to take a seat in a Ford Fiesta Rally3 and test it in Poland.
The 18-year-old covered a total of 160 kilometres and drove the Ford built by M-Sport over the tarmac stages of Poland. Later, he attended the M-Sport workshop in Krakow. The youngster is currently competing in the Australian Rally Championship, but he has also recently made a guest appearance in Great Britain. Now he has big plans!
The Rally3 car for the JWRC would suit his style well, so a move up would be the logical step. He says: “It has more power and torque than the Fiesta Rally4 and because it’s a four-wheel drive car, there’s no more spinning tyres at the line. You can really drive this car like that, I like that a lot. If you work hard, the car offers a lot. I’m impressed.”
“As you can imagine, I wanted to race in the JWRC anyway, but now that I’ve driven the car, I just know I have to go there,” says the talented racer. “The chance to drive this car in the WRC is just the thing and that’s what we’re working very hard towards now.” However, McRae will have to find the budget first, as his venture will be more expensive than competing in the Australian championship, where he drives a Subaru.
