Maurides: The (temporary) end of a misunderstanding

In January 2023, Brazilian striker Maurides came to St. Pauli together with Elias Saad and Karol Mets as part of the squad’s preparations for the relegation battle in the second division at the time. However, unlike the latter duo, he never established himself. The striker is now moving to Debreceni VSC on loan.

The departure of the 30-year-old center forward Maurides to the first Hungarian division is also an attempt to find a way out of a hopeless sporting situation. And the, for the time being, end of a misunderstanding.

Back from summer vacation overweight

After the signing of Abdoulie Ceesay, he is only center forward number 4 behind Johannes Eggestein and Andreas Albers and the Gambian. Two years ago, sporting director Andreas Bornemann signed him from Radomiak Radom in Poland for around €450,000 because he embodied a profile that St. Pauli didn’t have in its squad at the time. However, Maurides rarely made an impact, was repeatedly plagued by injuries and, to everyone’s surprise, left himself out of the side last summer.

After the change of coaches from Fabian Hürzeler to Alexander Blessin, which was originally supposed to go hand in hand with a change of system to two strikers and would have opened up completely new prospects for him, Maurides had come out of his summer vacation overweight. The result: instead of going to the training camp in Austria, the beefy attacker had to slim down and only made a brief appearance this season.

Honest self-awareness

The (temporary) end of his time at Millerntor is marked by 15 appearances in two years without a goal and an honest self-assessment by the former hope: “So far, I have not been able to show what I had set out to do at St. Pauli. I am one hundred percent convinced of my abilities and very motivated. I want to be back on the pitch in Hungary and ready for more action.”

It seems unlikely that this action will come in Hamburg again. After the end of the loan next summer, Maurides still has a valid contract with St. Pauli until 2026, but his prospects appear bleak given the increased quality of the squad compared to two years ago.
