Match abandoned after collapse of ex-Wolfsburg Dost – “I’m fine”.

Worries about Bas Dost. The former Bundesliga striker collapsed in injury time during the AZ Alkmaar game against NEC Nijmegen. In the meantime, the 34-year-old reported from the hospital.

Dost collapsed during his Dutch club Nijmegen’s match in Alkmaar on Sunday night. The 34-year-old slumped in the center circle in stoppage time without any opposition intervention and lay motionless on his back.

Conscious and responsive

After anxious minutes of first aid, AZ announced that Dost was conscious and responsive. As the newspaper “De Gelderlander” later reported, he was already giving a thumbs up again when he left the pitch on a stretcher to the applause of the spectators.

The match was first interrupted after the incident and then abandoned. Nijmegen had led 2:1, with the former Wolfsburg and Frankfurt player scoring the 1:0 goal.

What exactly happened to Dost was initially unknown. After his collapse, players from both teams stood protectively around him and shielded him with a cloth. Later in the dressing room, Dost had already sat up on the stretcher when his father arrived there and he called his wife to calm her down, “De Gelderlander” reported.

“I’m fine “

Later in the evening, Dost spoke out from the hospital. Via the NEC’s X channel he let it be known: “I’m fine. The help I received on the spot was fantastic. I’m in the hospital now and doing well. Thanks for all the support!” The post shows Dost smiling in his hospital bed with a thumbs up.

The collapse brought back memories of the collapse of Denmark’s Christian Eriksen, who survived a cardiac arrest on the field at the 2021 European Championship.

New arrival from Utrecht – recovery wishes from SGE and VfL

Dost plays since this season in Nijmegen, came in the summer from FC Utrecht to the league rival. In the Bundesliga, the 34-year-old played a total of 121 games and scored 48 goals. He played for VfL Wolfsburg between 2012 and 2016, and after a stint with Sporting Lisbon, he returned to the German top flight and played for Eintracht Frankfurt in the 2019/20 and 2020/21 seasons before moving to Club Brugge.

Eintracht and VfL sent get-well wishes towards their former player on Sunday evening. “The Eintracht family is thinking of you and wishes you a full recovery,” a statement from Hessen read. The Wolves joined in.
