Marterer qualifies for US Open

German tennis player Maximilian Marterer has qualified for the main draw of the US Open. The Nuremberg native defeated Ricardo Bonadio of Italy 6-4, 6-3 in the third and final qualifying round for the Grand Slam tournament in New York.

Marterer, ranked 157 in the world, will now face Croatian 15th seed Marin Cilic in the first round. German tennis players Eva Lys and Tamara Korpatsch lost their matches in the final qualifying round and thus missed out on the main draw.

Marterer is one of a total of eight German tennis professionals who will be competing in the singles competition at the US Open. Daniel Altmaier, Peter Gojowczyk and Oscar Otte are also in the men’s main draw, while Tatjana Maria, Jule Niemeier, Andrea Petkovic and Laura Siegemund are in the women’s singles.

The defending US Open champion is Daniil Medvedev of Russia in the men’s singles and Emma Raducanu of England in the women’s singles.
