German tennis player Tatjana Maria has suffered a setback shortly before the US Open. The 37-year-old from Bad Saulgau lost 0:6, 3:6 to China’s Wang Xiyu in the first round of the WTA tournament in Monterrey, Mexico. The last Grand Slam of the year is scheduled for Monday in New York.
After her first-round defeat at the Olympic Games in Paris, Maria also failed at her opening hurdle on her return to the WTA Tour at the tournament in Toronto two weeks ago, losing to Ukraine’s Marta Kostjuk.
