There is something very special about a local player coming into a top team and making a name for themselves and Marcus Rashford is the latest in a long line of local lads to pull on the famous Manchester United shirt. After exploding onto the scene in great fashion when he scored two goals in his debut match in 2016, he became the latest local hero at Old Trafford.
Some pundits may argue that he has so far failed to continue the form that his early ability threatened and manager Mourinho has not handed him as many chances as Rashford would have liked. On Saturday, Rashford calmly lashed a goal past his club teammate David De Gea as England played Spain. His performance showed yet again that the big stage does not daunt him and he is more than ready to play at the highest level on a regular basis.
Rashford handed the iconic No. 10 shirt for this season
In the summer, Manchester United handed Rashford the iconic No. 10 shirt as a reward for his outstanding performances. The more skeptical amongst us may claim that it was a tactic to appease him given his discontent at the limited game time. Either way, Rashford started the season with the No. 10 on his back, following in the footsteps of club legends including Wayne Rooney, Ruud van Nistelrooy, Teddy Sheringham, and Norman Whiteside, to name a few.
Rashford bounced back after a red card against Burnley
His performance against Spain on Saturday showed the people outside of the club why he is worthy of the shirt number and his teammate Lee Grant has backed him to ‘do it justice’. Rashford received a red card in his last match for Manchester United, perhaps a sign that he has been frustrated to watch much of the early part of the season from the bench. He used his opportunity against Spain to remind everyone what he is really about and you would not bet against him going on to join the previous No. 10 wearers as club legends at some point in the future.
