Formula 1 expert Marc Surer believes that Sebastian Vettel is still one of the best drivers in Formula 1, even though the past few years at Aston Martin and Ferrari have not led to the desired success. The stigma of having won a Formula One world championship with only one team will remain after Vettel’s retirement announcement.
“Of course it’s a pity that he won all the titles only with Red Bull. It would have been nice if he had won another title with Ferrari, because that is a bit of a shadow.”
“Now you just say: Ok, that was the good phase of Red Bull and he won everything and then he didn’t make it. It’s kind of a pity,” said the Swiss, who does not want to join in this tenor himself.
Surer: Why Vettel is a “super driver “
“I mean, he has done really sensational things. He’s also won races that you’re not supposed to win. For me, that’s always the difference between a super driver and a good driver,” Surer explains.
“If you don’t have the fastest car and then still win the race, only very, very few people can do that and Sebastian Vettel is one of them. That’s why I rank him among the greats. “
Vettel still as good as he used to be?
Even though the Heppenheimer has only been in mediocre cars over the past three years and his last Formula 1 win was a while ago with Singapore 2019, Surer says the team-internal comparison with Lance Stroll at Aston Martin makes it clear that Vettel is still one of the best.
“Others have struggled, even a Perez has struggled against Stroll. He actually had Stroll easily under control, which is why: if [Aston Martin] had driven further in front, it would have looked very different,” says the Swiss.
“Then he would have won the race, and Stroll might have made it to the podium by the skin of his teeth. So the gap to Stroll actually shows that he still has the speed. Whether the motivation was there every weekend, that’s another question. “
