Manchester City has gained a reputation for spending big on well-established players over the last few seasons, with many rival fans accusing them of ‘buying the league’. With a rich sheikh owner in Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Manchester City have been able to pay large sums of money to get the players that they want.
Manchester City – the big spenders
Riyad Mahrez recently became their most expensive signing at £60million, overtaking the £57million paid for Aymeric Laporte in January. They have a team full of expensive players, so it is good to see that they are still giving younger players the chance to do well at the club. Last season local boy Phil Foden was around the first team squad, showing promise that City is not just relying on buying the big, proven stars.

City sign Claudio Gomes from PSG
Now Manchester City has brought a young player into the squad by the name of Claudio Gomes. Whilst he may not be well known in England, Gomes is a French international youth who has come through the ranks at PSG. Gomes has already been training with his new teammates in the US and manager Pep Guardiola seems to be very impressed with his new recruit: “He has been so, so good. He could stay with us because from what we have seen in these days, the impression is good, so good.”
Gomes is a defensive midfielder who has represented France at Under 16, 17 and 18 levels. Whilst it is unlikely that Guardiola will put him straight into the team, he may get chances in some of the cup competitions, where younger players are often used in the earlier rounds. He certainly looks like a player with an exciting future ahead of him and PSG will no doubt be disappointed that they failed to get him to sign a new contract at the club.
