In the completed transfer period, Mainz 05 made a whopping plus: Crystal Palace counts 11 million euros transfer fee for Jean-Philippe Mateta. Delano Burgzorg comes for 300,000 euros loan fee and thus as a bargain.
The two personnel cannot be offset against each other. Mateta had already been on loan to the English Premier League club for a year, who, after paying a loan fee of 3.5 million euros, are now paying a transfer fee of 11 million euros for the early purchase. Burgzorg, on the other hand, was initially brought in on loan from Heracles Almelo, coupled with an option to buy in the summer for a €2 million transfer fee.
While Mateta, as a striker, does not necessarily have the qualities that 05 coach Bo Svensson demands from his attackers, attacking player Burgzorg has learned how to defend over the past two years in Almelo under a German coach. Former DFB head coach Frank Wormuth, with whom Mainz president Stefan Hofmann also completed his football coaching training, is in his fourth year with the Dutch first division club.
Talks since September
“I think Mainz is the right step for my development,” Burgzorg told a media panel on Tuesday. He said there had already been initial talks with the Rheinhessen side last year. “My adviser had been in contact with Mainz since September. About a week ago he called me and told me he had a surprise for me. The next day Bo called me, we exchanged ideas and the conversation went very well. From that day on, everything happened very quickly. In the following days, I travelled to Germany straight away,” says the 23-year-old.
More freedom
The fact that the Amsterdam native played on the left wing at Heracles and is intended more as a striker in Mainz does not cause Burgzorg any headaches: “This way I can push forward into the free spaces and have more freedom on the field.” His goal is for his return to be “significantly higher”. In the Eredivisie he scored 15 goals in 80 games.
