German hopeful Eva Lys had no problems with her opening opponent, but now faces a top player.
German tennis hopeful Eva Lys advanced to the second round of the WTA tournament in Madrid without much trouble. The 23-year-old won her opening match on Wednesday against the Serbian qualifier Teodora Kostovic, who is six years her junior, 6-2, 6-2. On Friday (Sky), Lys will face world number three Jessica Pegula from the USA.
After her first-round exit in Stuttgart, Lys faced little resistance from Kostovic, who had made it into the main draw of a WTA tournament for the first time.
Although the Hamburg native lost her serve right at the start of the second set, she then won five games in a row. After 1 hour and 17 minutes, Lys, who caused a sensation as a lucky loser at the Australian Open in January and is now ranked 68th, converted her first match point.
