Eva Lys had a big win in sight but was narrowly beaten in Beijing.
Qualifier Eva Lys missed out on a surprise at the WTA tournament in Beijing. The 21-year-old from Hamburg lost to world No. 16 Jelena Ostapenko 6:2, 3:6, 2:6, although Lys kept the duel with the former French Open winner open for a long time and only had to concede defeat to the Latvian after 1:56 hours.
Tatjana Maria (Bad Saulgau) is the only German in the second round of the 8.1 million dollar tournament in the Chinese capital. The 36-year-old had already won her opening match against Martina Trevisan (Italy) in two sets on Saturday and will now face either former Wimbledon champion Yelena Rybakina (Kazakhstan/No. 5) or Zheng Qinwen (China).
Lys (WTA No. 122) had qualified for the main draw of a WTA tournament in the 1000 category for the first time and fought doggedly to reach the second round. The last time she made it was at the US Open. At the end of August, Lys won her first Grand Slam match in New York and moved closer to the top 100 in the world rankings.
