PSG has won the French Super Cup for the 11th time in the last 12 years: In Doha, Dembelé scored the winning goal against Monaco.
The Trophee des Champions has been one of PSG’s favorite competitions in recent years, with the capital club winning ten of the last eleven editions. The fact that this year’s Supercup is also not unimportant to Luis Enrique was made clear by the line-up.
Despite a tight program (six more games in January), he relied on his A team. Compared to the 4-3 win on penalties in Lens, only Donnarumma and Zaire-Emery came on for Safonov and Fabian in the starting lineup.
Doué hits the crossbar early on
The goalkeeper initially had nothing to do, however, as Monaco concentrated on compacting the midfield. As a result, Adi Hütter’s team, who only extended his contract until 2027 on Saturday, took PSG’s three-man midfield out of the game, but did not create any opportunities themselves either.
Köhn’s mistake – the goalkeeper was one of seven new signings after the 4-1 win at L’Union Saint-Jean FC – almost undermined the team’s game plan early on: Doué only hit the bar (8th). Otherwise, the sedate Parisians had a hard time. Only long-range shots or set pieces created any real danger. Dembelé, for example, was stopped by Köhn (22), while Vitinha’s effort was off target by just centimeters (30).
Wild phase about ten minutes into the second half
The game suddenly picked up pace before half-time. With Donnarumma saving Akliouche’s long-range effort (40) and Lee missing twice (45, 45.+2), the teams went in at half-time all square.
After a brief period of feeling each other out after the restart, the teams picked up where they had left off in the final minutes of the first half. Both opened up more and more, creating more chances. But there were still no goals: Donnarumma was on hand against Ben Seghir (53′) and was lucky when Vandersons shot hit the post (55′), while Hakimi was denied by Caio Henrique (57′).
PSG spent a long time despairing at Köhn
As the game progressed, PSG increased the tempo of their passing to pin their opponents back in their half and were desperate to avoid a penalty shoot-out – and they succeeded: with Köhn having made – yet another – strong save to deny Hakimi (74′) and Goncalo Ramos (90.+1), Dembelé made light work of the second minute of stoppage time.
Thus, PSG celebrated their first title of the season in their first competitive game of the calendar year. Now both teams are heading back to France from Doha. The 17th matchday of Ligue 1 is scheduled for next week. Monaco will open the season in Nantes (7 p.m.). One day later, PSG will host St. Etienne (5 p.m.).
