The tennis mecca in Wimbledon is to be renovated. A London borough council has now halted the plans for the time being. However, this is not the final decision
A London borough council has rejected plans to build a new tennis stadium in Wimbledon. Wandsworth Council voted unanimously against building the 8,000-capacity stadium and 38 new tennis courts in a protected park in Wimbledon.
Previously, the council in the neighboring borough of Merton, where the majority of the site is located, had approved the project. The next step is for London Mayor Sadiq Khan to consider the application.
The All England Club expressed hope that the plans will ultimately be realized despite Wandsworth’s veto. “Of course we are disappointed with the London Borough of Wandsworth’s decision,” said chief executive Sally Bolton in a statement, according to the PA news agency. “Our proposals will bring London one of the biggest sporting transformations since (the 2012 Olympics) as well as significant benefits for the local community. “1
The All England Club’s plans include building the 8,000-capacity main stadium on the site of the former Wimbledon golf course. However, the proposal has been met with fierce opposition from some residents in the area. A group called Save Wimbledon Park (SWP) also campaigned against the project, citing, among other things, the threat of damage to the environment. SWP welcomed Wandsworth Borough Council’s rejection
