Liverpool have requested the postponement of Thursday’s semi-final first leg against Arsenal FC in the English League Cup. The Reds said on Tuesday evening that the reason was further corona cases.
First-team training was already cancelled on Tuesday after further positive tests were found in players and staff. In addition to coach Jürgen Klopp, regular players Roberto Firmino, Joel Matip and goalkeeper Alisson had already been absent at short notice for Sunday’s clash with Chelsea FC (2-2) due to suspected Corona infection.
Liverpool now said other factors such as injuries and the call-up of players including Sadio Mané, Mohamed Salah and Naby Keita for the Africa Cup would affect their availability for the first leg at the Emirates Stadium.
Liverpool: “No prospect of improvement “
“As there is no prospect of the current situation improving and possibly worsening prior to Thursday’s match, the club considers it prudent and reasonable to request a postponement of the match,” Liverpool said.
The English Football League said it would “make a decision as soon as possible once the circumstances have been fully considered. “
