Berlin – Sabine Lisicki has won her first round match at the Berlin Lawn Tennis Tournament.
After an 18-month injury layoff, the Berlin-based player beat American Asia Muhammad 6-4, 6-4 in the first round of qualifying. “It’s just one match, but for me it’s worth so much. It’s one of the most wonderful feelings to play here at home,” said the 2013 Wimbledon finalist, who did not make her comeback until 2 May this year due to a serious knee injury sustained at the end of 2020.
From the start, Lisicki had the match under control and showed a very appealing performance against the world number 155, which was mainly characterised by her usual hard serve. She was also superior to her opponent in terms of play. In order to reach the main draw, the former world number twelve, who had temporarily dropped out of the world rankings and is now at least ranked 994 again, needs a win against Australian Daria Saville on Sunday.
