He has conquered the world of soccer – now it’s probably eSports’ turn: Lionel Messi is the new co-owner of the KRÜ Esports organization. There he meets his good friend and founder Sergio Agüero.
He has won everything there is to win on the real pitch: The World Cup, the Copa America, the Champions League and numerous national championships and cup competitions. Can Lionel Messi also achieve these successes in the virtual world? The newly crowned winner of the Ballon d’Or does not use a controller at the highest level. Instead, he is now co-owner of the eSports organization KRÜ Esports.
So the titles have to be won by others. And not even in FC 24: there is currently no squad for the current soccer simulation from EA SPORTS. KRÜ Esports has celebrated its greatest triumphs to date in Valorant. In 2021 and 2022, the team made it to the final round of the Champions League – the World Cup, so to speak. In 2021, the team even failed to reach the semi-finals. The Argentinian organization is also active in League of Legends and Rocket.
Messi: “Okay, let’s play”
The connection between the professional footballer and KRÜ Esports is obvious: Founder Sergio Agüero is not only a former national team colleague, but also a good friend of Messi’s. And it was Agüero who announced the news on Tuesday evening. In doing so, he allowed himself a little joke with the fans: the almost three-minute video was initially dramaturgically structured as if he wanted to announce his retirement from KRÜ Esports.
Agüero even says that he is “no longer the owner of KRÜ”. Only to clarify seconds later with a grin that they are now “two”. Then the channel switches to Messi, who is watching the video of his new business partner. “Okay, let’s play,” concludes the seven-time FIFA World Player of the Year. How and whether Messi will be involved in the operational activities at KRÜ Esports remains to be seen
