Like 2019: Collins in Melbourne semi-finals

Melbourne – American tennis player Danielle Collins has reached the semi-finals of the Australian Open like 2019. The world No. 30 defeated France’s Alizé Cornet 7-5, 6-1 in the surprise quarterfinals in Melbourne.

After Madison Keys, the 28-year-old is the second American to reach the final round. She will face the winner of the clash between former French Open winner Iga Swiatek of Poland and outsider Kaia Kanepi of Estonia on Thursday. Keys will battle Australian world number one Ashleigh Barty for a place in the final.

Collins was already 5-2 up against unseeded Frenchwoman Cornet, but had to concede the equaliser before securing the first set and then leaving no doubt about her success. Cornet reached the round of the best eight for the first time in her 63rd Grand Slam appearance.

Two years ago, Collins had dispatched Angelique Kerber from Kiel in the round of 16 on her way to the final round of the first Grand Slam tournament of the season. She then lost to Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic in the battle for a place in the final.
