Bayer Leverkusen have now failed to win five games in a row and are slowly but surely sliding into sporting misery. The people in charge know this themselves.
“Complicated question – simple answer: We live in a sport that thrives on results. We are now standing there with a few games without a win,” said Gerardo Seoane on “Sky” after the game against VfL Wolfsburg (0:2). The defeat was the fifth competitive match in a row in which the Werkself did not win and the second home defeat within a few days after the 1:2 in the cup against second-division side Karlsruher SC. Robert Andrich, too, is clear what the hour has struck. “The results just don’t fit and that’s what counts in the end,” said the midfielder.
Seoane’s classification and Andrich’s demand
Results crisis arguably yes, but Seoane nevertheless took pains to classify the Werkself’s current situation: “We saw great games at the beginning of the season. The team can do it, they have the talent. But we also had some good performances recently, for example in the draw in Sevilla and in the first half against Cologne. So I wouldn’t analyse it quite so simply. Nevertheless, we know that we don’t bring this efficiency and dynamism to the pitch, especially in our forward play, as we did at the beginning of the season.”
Andrich would like to get back to the ease of the start of the season and is now exerting gentle pressure in terms of proposed solutions, especially on the many young players in the squad. “People always talk a lot about how much potential we have. But situations like this, especially for our young players, are super important. They have to try to stand their ground and not turn tail. I still think that we give full throttle as a team and stand together – we do that really well,” said the new summer signing from Union Berlin.

Seoane, on the other hand, also speaks of the energy that the team now needs – in addition to the trust of the coaches and staff – to get back on the road to success. The Bayer fans, who had suffered three bitter home defeats in a row (1:5 against Bayern, then the two most recent against KSC and VfL), audibly voiced their displeasure after the final whistle, but the Werkself showed understanding. Captain Lukas Hradecky even made sure that the team went to the supporters’ area after the end of the game and talked to the fans himself;
Seoane, meanwhile, hopes that the team will soon close ranks with its own supporters in a different way: “I understand the fans’ reaction after the game. I thought the team’s exchange with the fans was good, but that shouldn’t become the rule. We know we can do better – and it’s our job to show that again. “
