Lamine Yamal: “I hope I never leave Barca”

Lamine Yamal wants to become a legend at FC Barcelona. During a TV appearance, he spoke about his Ballon d’Or chances, buddy Nico Williams – and the alcohol-free European Championship party

Lamine Yamal would like an octopus. “When I go to friends’ houses, nobody has an octopus, but I do.” Unfortunately, his mother says that’s impossible. “When I was 13, she said at 18, now she says at 21.”

Lamine Yamal has already fulfilled other dreams at the age of 17. He is a regular player at his favorite club FC Barcelona, European champion with Spain and recently also a candidate for the Ballon d’Or. That’s why he now prefers to go shopping online, and sitting in a café is “impossible”, the winger told TV station Antena 3, to whom he also talked about his octopus dream.

However, he had been prepared for this life long enough at Barca. “Since the European Championship, I’ve seen that people are happier. It’s a dream for me.” And that’s why he doesn’t want to wake up any time soon. “I hope I never leave Barca,” says the youngster, whose contract is valid until 2026 and includes a one billion euro buy-out clause. “I hope to become a legend at Barcelona.”

He already seems to be on the right track. The fact that he is one of the 30 candidates for the Ballon d’Or 2024 is fitting. When asked whether he sees a chance of winning it, Lamine Yamal replies: “No.” But it is “good to warm up to see if I have a chance at some point.”

Lamine Yamal would like to play with Williams “every week ”

At the national team, he learned of his nomination, but first of that of his buddy Nico Williams, who, despite all the speculation, did not switch from Bilbao to Barca after the European Championship. “Of course” he would ‘love to play every week’ with the 22-year-old, ‘but he’s at Athletic’, says Lamine Yamal, who shares many interests with Williams: ”We like the same things, we watch TikTok, we dance, he likes the same music, he does silly things.”

And he is also the European champion. The party after the triumph in Berlin was “crazy”, says Lamine Yamal, looking back blissfully. “I thought Alvaro Morata or Unai Simon were serious people …” Incidentally, he himself dutifully kept his hands off the alcohol. “I only drank Coke. “
