Aissa Laidouni and 1. FC Union Berlin are going their separate ways. As the Köpenickers announced on Friday, the midfielder is moving to Al-Wakrah SC in Qatar
Aissa Laidouni came to Berlin from Ferencvaros Budapest in January 2023 and initially impressed. However, the midfielder was unable to build on his strong first six months in his first full Bundesliga season. The Tunisian international (45 caps, two goals) only came on as a substitute in 13 of his 23 appearances. He did not score a goal in the Bundesliga, but at least made three assists.
Unsurprisingly, Laidouni’s future in Berlin was recently uncertain due to an oversupply in midfield. Now there is certainty: after 50 competitive matches, including six in the UEFA Champions League, Laidouni is leaving the capital for the Persian Gulf.
Heldt praises, Laidouni speaks of a “very special time “
However, there was never any bad blood. Horst Heldt (Managing Director Men’s Professional Football) emphasizes that since Laidouni “joined us in the winter of 2023, he immediately brought his own accents to the game and hardly needed any time to get used to it. Aissa has always acted in the interests of the team and given everything for our club.”
The player himself also looks back on his time in Germany with satisfaction. “For me, the one and a half years at 1. FC Union Berlin were a very special time,” the 27-year-old is quoted as saying in a club statement: “I was able to experience an extraordinary phase and gain unforgettable experiences. My thanks go to all Union players and I wish the club all the best for the future. “
