La Liga refuses to give in: tug-of-war over Olmo license continues

The dispute over the eligibility of Dani Olmo and Pau Victor goes into the next round. After Spain’s highest sports court confirmed the validity of the licenses of the two professionals, the Spanish football league now filed an administrative complaint on Monday.

The tug-of-war between FC Barcelona, La Liga and the RFEF over the playing permits of Dani Olmo and Pau Victor has been going on for months. The discussions around the registration are never-ending. The league’s goal is to have the playing permits of the two players annulled due to unfulfilled financial commitments.

The two professionals and FC Barcelona had appealed to the Spanish Supreme Sports Court (Consejo Superior del Deporte, CSD) against the refusal of the league and the national association RFEF to authorize the game – and were vindicated.

On Thursday, the CSD had confirmed Olmos’s license and that of his compatriot Pau Victor, arguing that the monitoring committee, which emerged from the joint coordination contract between RFEF and La Liga, was not authorized to refuse player licenses.

La Liga is not giving up

The Catalans may have thought they were safe, but the league announced an appeal against the ruling because it considers the CSD decision to be “not legally compliant”. This decision “seriously violates the regulatory framework for economic control and the granting of sports licenses” and, among other things, threatens the principle of equality between clubs.

Olmo misses Dortmund duels

In terms of sport, Barcelona cannot currently rely on Olmo, who has played for Barca 28 times so far (13 times scoring or assisting a goal). The former Leipzig player is currently missing for the Catalans due to injury and will also miss the Champions League quarter-final against Borussia Dortmund on Wednesday and next week Tuesday (April 15), but according to CSD, he has been allowed to play for the Blaugrana again since January.
