As in England, the fixture list for the new season was also presented in Spain on Tuesday. The first and last match days are really tough
La Liga has drawn lots in grand style. A small ceremony, during which Spain’s European champions Jesus Navas and Daniel Vivian themselves were connected to the quarters in Germany, served to announce the fixture list for the new season. It was – from the result – a nice draw.
The first matchday on the weekend of August 16-18 – the new Premier League season starts at the same time – already has a lot to offer. The top four teams from the previous season all have to play away from home
Second Clasico at Camp Nou again?
Champions Real Madrid kick off the new season in Mallorca, while FC Barcelona face a difficult away game at Valencia FC. FC Girona (at Real Betis) and Atletico Madrid (at FC Villarreal) also have a tough task ahead of them.
The highlight games were, of course, scheduled early on Tuesday afternoon. The first Clasico, at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu in Madrid, will take place on matchday 11 at the end of October. The reunion in Barcelona will then take place on matchday 35 in mid-May – so it could be nothing less than a championship showdown
It will be exciting to see whether FCB, who start the season with head coach Hansi Flick, will be able to host their home games at the Camp Nou again, which is currently being renovated. Most recently, and until further notice, they will be held at the city’s Olympic Stadium. The Catalans are scheduled to return to their modernized soccer temple at the end of the calendar year.
If the title race has not already been decided after the late second Clasico, things could get really exciting on the final matchday. “Jornada 38” has three potential cracker games in store for the top teams. Real have to play Real Sociedad at the Bernabeu, while Barca have to face their arch-rivals Athletic away from home. Girona and Atletico face each other directly at the same time
