Kyrgios ends long dry spell

Tennis pro Nick Kyrgios shows that he can still win. The Australian has notched up his first victory on the ATP tour since 2022.

Tennis pro Nick Kyrgios can still win. At the ATP Masters in Miami, the extroverted Australian celebrated his first victory on the ATP Tour since October 2022. Former Wimbledon finalist Kyrgios defeated US qualifier Mackenzie McDonald in the first round after 1 hour and 42 minutes with 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.

“The win obviously gives me energy, but I have to be realistic and see if my wrist hurts again tomorrow. It’s very exhausting here,” said Kyrgios, who had already considered retirement due to his protracted injury problems. Kyrgios has slipped to 892nd place in the world rankings.

The last time Kyrgios won was in Tokyo on October 6, 2022. At that time, there was a first-round victory against the Pole Kamil Majchrzak. After that, Kyrgios was forced to watch for 18 months due to injury, and his comeback at the start of the season at the Australian Open was not very successful. Most recently, he had to withdraw in Indian Wells due to wrist problems.

The match against McDonald was evenly poised. The 29-year-old, who has repeatedly made a name for himself as a tennis lout in the past, remained highly focused throughout the entire match at the Hard Rock Stadium. In the deciding third set, he broke his opponent’s serve to lead 4-3 and then converted his first match point to win.
