Wimbledon finalist Nick Kyrgios’ court date in Australia has been postponed by three weeks.
The hearing with the 27-year-old tennis pro will now take place on 23 August rather than 2 August, according to the Canberra Magistrates’ Court docket. It is not officially known what the hearing will be about. Kyrgios does not have to appear in person at the court date, the Australian news agency AAP wrote. He is entered for the Masters tournament in Cincinnati from August 14-21, with the US Open starting in New York on August 29.”
“The nature of the allegations is serious “
According to the AAP report, Kyrgios is now being represented by lawyer Michael Kukulies-Smith. He did not comment on details of the trial. Lawyer Jason Moffett, who represented Australian Kyrgios as legal counsel in early July, according to the Canberra Times, told the newspaper at the time: “The nature of the allegations is serious and Mr Kyrgios takes the allegation very seriously.” According to the report, it was an incident “related to a domestic relationship”, Moffett said.
Kyrgios had last declined to comment on the substance of the court date at the Lawn Classic in London. “Obviously I have a lot of thoughts, a lot of many things I want to say, sort of my view of things,” he said just over three weeks ago. “I understand that everybody wants to ask questions about it and all that, but I can’t say too much about it at the moment.”
A statement from Johannessen, the law firm acting for Kyrgios, said just over three weeks ago that the allegations had not been secured or confirmed by prosecutors or the tennis player himself. The court also does not consider the allegations as facts, therefore Kyrgios is not to be seen as a defendant. The tennis pro will take a stand on all allegations.
