Kühn’s odyssey ends in Cyprus

Philipp Kühn made a name for himself at VfL Osnabrück, but the 32-year-old goalkeeper left the purple and whites this summer – and embarked on an odyssey in search of a new club. That odyssey has now come to an end in Cyprus.

Philipp Kühn was at VfL Osnabrück for over half a decade. Between 2018/19 and 2023/24, he made 162 appearances for the Lower Saxony club, experiencing both highs and lows: he was promoted to the second division with VfL twice, and relegated twice. In the summer, however, the separation took place – Kühn left VfL at his own request and was one of 16 players that VfL released after relegation to the third division.

Kühn then went looking for a club – apparently with limited success. Talks were held with SV Werder Bremen, who were looking for a number three, but ultimately were not successful.

Turbulence in Münster

In mid-September, Kühn finally trained with Preußen Münster as a player without a contract. At the time, the Münster team had major personnel concerns in the goal area due to numerous injuries, so Kühn unceremoniously trained as a guest player. “A win-win situation for both sides,” as Preußen’s managing director Ole Kittner explained at the time, still with a view to the “special constellation”.

Ready for the Mediterranean

Ultimately, his appearance in Münster was no more than a brief interlude; Kühn’s future now lies in the Mediterranean. As Apollon Limassol confirmed on Thursday, the goalkeeper signed for the Cypriot first division club until the end of the season for the blue-and-whites. After Rot-Weiss Ahlen, SV Sandhausen, Rot-Weiß Oberhausen, Viktoria Köln, Drochtersen/Assel and Osnabrück, Limassol is the 32-year-old’s first foreign station. Apollon is currently in sixth place in the domestic league and would reach the championship round as things stand.
