Former tennis world number two Barbora Krejcikova has won the seventh title of her career at the WTA tournament in San Diego, California. The 2021 Czech French Open champion beat 2020 Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin of the United States 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 in the final on Saturday (local time).
This is Krejcikova’s second WTA title this year. The 27-year-old had already triumphed in Dubai in February. With her victory, Krejcikova will move up to tenth place in the world rankings.
In Osaka, Japan, Ashlyn Krueger pulled off a big surprise. The 19-year-old American, ranked 123 in the world, won her first Tour title after defeating top-seeded Chinese Lin Zhu 6-3, 7-6 (8-6). It was also her debut in the final of only her eleventh WTA tournament. In the world rankings, Krueger moves up one place to 73rd – a career best.
