Kompany: “There are no excuses at the moment”

That was nothing: FC Bayern went down 4-1 in Barcelona – and at the same time, their long-standing winning streak came to an end. However, coach Vincent Kompany says: “This won’t decide the season.” But it needs to be analyzed.

It’s not every day that a player scores three goals against Bayern Munich. In the entire history of the European Cup for Munich, only Roy Makaay, Sergio Aguero and Cristiano Ronaldo have managed this so far – and this Wednesday, Barcelona’s Raphinha.

But that’s not all: in the end, the Bundesliga record champions conceded a deserved 1-4 – against former coach Hansi Flick, against former player and scorer Robert Lewandowski, and also against the trend that has been in place for years. After all, the German FCB is actually the Spanish FCB’s biggest nemesis.

Between 2020 and 2022 alone, there have been five defeats for the Blaugrana in five CL duels – including the legendary 2-8.

“We will of course stand together”

But things turned out differently, which Bayern coach Vincent Kompany also acknowledged without envy on DAZN: “We lost, it was a clear defeat.”

The question now is: What do the Munich take away from Catalonia? Where do we need to start? What to work on? What needs to be addressed?

The FCB coach doesn’t want to rush into anything and let everything sink in first. However, the Belgian did give a little insight into his thoughts: “We will of course stand together and learn from this game. But I don’t want to analyze it too much now, we have to do that in peace.”

He admitted that the 0-1 start after just 58 seconds had taken its toll on his mind: “The first goal is of course very bitter.” It was also noticeable that despite a quadruple change by Kompany (“You have to make a change at these moments to get a different dynamic into the game”), no turnaround was achieved in the second half, which was played in its entirety.

Therefore, the coach was clear: “There are no excuses at the moment, only a clear defeat.” Against a Spanish league leader who had come with a powerful offensive department around Raphinha, Lewandowski and the agile and often successful in dribbling Lamine Yamal: “That’s great quality – and we haven’t always had solutions against these three offensive players.”

But what is important from his point of view after the 1-4 and before the next tasks in Bochum on Sunday (3:30 p.m.), in Mainz on Wednesday (8:45 p.m.) in the DFB Cup and against Union the following Saturday (3:30 p.m.) or at the next Champions League appearance against Benfica Lisbon (November 6, 9 p.m.): “This will not decide this season. We have to learn from it, we have to stand together and analyze it all together.” In peace.
