Klitschko thinks about comeback

Wladimir Klitschko is at war with his home country Ukraine. But even in dark times, the former world champion still thinks about his sport – and an old record.

Wladimir Klitschko is thinking about a comeback in the ring.

The former boxing world champion is toying with the idea of breaking George Foremann’s ancient record. The latter had won another world championship fight in 1994 at the age of 45.

“When I’m in good shape, who knows, maybe I’ll have this dream of breaking George Foreman’s record. That motivates me to get up every day and do sports. Everyone has their own motivation,” the 46-year-old Klitschko now told Bild.

Klitschko: “I would like to break a record “

The statements come as a surprise at first glance at this point in time – not only because Klitschko had already ended his career in 2017. But above all because he is in the middle of a war with his home country Ukraine. His brother Vitali, once a world-class boxer himself, is the mayor of the capital Kiev.

“I have also learned that despite the war, you must not forget life. Sport is part of my life,” Klitschko said. He said he was pleased that his former rival Tyson Fury defended what he thought was his last world title at the weekend.

Klitschko: Priority is on the war in Ukraine

Klitschko continued, “Who knows, I don’t want to promise anything big here, but if I’m in good shape and especially also that the war in Ukraine comes to an end soon, and that our borders exist, without any invasion coming from Russia, then in the end: who knows?”

The goal – if the worst comes to the worst – is clear, he said. But the priorities lie elsewhere: “I don’t want to break a jaw, I want to break a record. I said that before the war. And during the war, it’s about peace in Ukraine and when peace comes, then we’ll talk about it again. “
