Guillermo Rigondeaux almost goes blind while cooking his favourite dish. The ex world boxing champion’s career hangs by a thread.
No boxing match has knocked him out, but now arguably the toughest fight of his life awaits Guillermo Rigondeaux after a cooking accident.
While the Cuban was preparing his favourite dish of black Cuban beans, a bean clogged the spot on the pressure cooker where the steam was supposed to escape. This resulted in the pressure cooker exploding and Rigondeaux injuring his face.
His manager Alex Boronte commented on the accident to ESPN: “If one of those beans gets clogged where the steam is supposed to come out, that’s like a bomb. That could have killed him. The next ten days will really decide his fighting career and his future. “
80 per cent of Rigondeaux’s vision had already been lost when he was admitted to hospital. Apparently, his eyes were treated with an anaesthetic injection.
The 41-year-old is a former world champion in super bantamweight and bantamweight. But whether he will ever see again as he did before the recent accident will only become clear in the coming days and weeks.
