Kerber reaches last 16 at Masters in Indian Wells

Indian Wells – Angelique Kerber has reached the last 16 at the Masters in Indian Wells. The former world number one defeated Darja Kassatkina 6-2, 6-1 on Sunday.

Due to Russia’s war of aggression in Ukraine, the Russian is listed as a neutral player. “I’m very happy to be in the next round,” Kerber said. “It was a good match from me.”

Kerber will now face Iga Swiatek of Poland in the last 16 for the first time in her career. The 20-year-old is number four in the world rankings, Kerber is currently ranked 16th.

The Masters in the Californian desert is one of the most important tournaments on the WTA Tour. The hard-court event is endowed with 8 584 055 US dollars. Kerber reached the final in 2019, losing in the quarter-finals to eventual winner Paula Badosa of Spain at last year’s edition, which was moved to the autumn due to Corona.
