Kerber opens in Stuttgart against Estonian Kontaveit

Stuttgart – Angelique Kerber faces a difficult task right from the start at the WTA tournament in Stuttgart. Germany’s best tennis player will face Estonian number five seed Anett Kontaveit in the first round, as the draw revealed.

The 34-year-old world number 17 has only won one of five matches against the eleven-ranked Kontaveit so far in her career.

Laura Siegemund will face Tamara Zidansek from Slovenia at the clay-court event starting on 18 April, while Jule Niemeier will face former US Open winner Bianca Andreescu from Canada. Top-seeded world number one Iga Swiatek from Poland has a bye in the first round.

The German women’s tennis team start their home tournament after a disappointment in the Billie Jean King Cup. By losing 3-1 in Kazakhstan, the German Tennis Federation selection missed qualifying for the finals in the team competition and will play against relegation on 11-12 November. Kerber lost both her singles matches in Nur-Sultan in three sets each.
