Angelique Kerber’s European comeback does not go as planned. Early end in Linz. Things are going better for Jule Niemeier
Former Wimbledon winner Angelique Kerber has suffered a defeat in her European comeback after taking a break to have a baby. The 36-year-old lost her sixteenth-final match at the WTA tournament in Linz against the Italian Lucia Bronzetti 1:6, 3:6.
Kerber had won the title in Linz in the final against Ana Ivanovic in 2013. Jule Niemeier reached the next round with a 6:3, 6:4 win over Russia’s Anna Blinkova and will now face Blinkova’s compatriot Ekaterina Alexandrova.
Kerber had only returned to the tennis tour at the United Cup around the turn of the year after an 18-month break to have a baby. Prior to that, she had not played a match since Wimbledon 2022 and gave birth to her daughter Liana in February 2023. Kerber was eliminated in the first round of the Australian Open
