Judo World Championships: Menz wins first German medal

Katharina Menz (Backnang) won the first medal for the German Judo Federation at the start of the World Championships in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. In the final of the weight category up to 48 kg Menz, who celebrates her 32nd birthday on Saturday, lost against defending champion Natsumi Tsunoda (Japan) and won silver. Bronze went to Assunta Scutto (Italy) and Abiba Abushakynova (Kazakhstan).

Moritz Plafky (Hennef) was eliminated in the men’s 60 kg category. The 26-year-old had a tough opening draw and lost to the Japanese Olympic champion and three-time world champion Naohisa Takato in his first preliminary round bout.
