Juan Martin Del Potro vs Robin Haase

World No.4 and Canadian Open third seed Juan Martin del Potro is having a renaissance year, his best since the US Open-winning 2009. He won the Mexican Open in Acapulco and Indian Wells, played in the semi-finals of the Miami Open and Roland Garros, as well as the quarter-finals of Wimbledon. He lost in both of those Grand Slams to Rafael Nadal. His 2018 overall record on tour is 35-9.

Juan Martin del Potro recent form

Juan Martin del Potro’s last appearance on the court was a Los Cabos Open final loss to Fabio Fognini. The Italian is playing his best tennis of the year, winning the last two tournaments he applied for (Los Cabos and Bastad). Interestingly enough, the two could be set for a rematch in Toronto, as either Fognini or Shapovalov will be del Potro’s potential opponent in the 1/8 finals.

Juan Martin del Potro vs Robin Haase Preview

While the odds are firmly in del Potro’s favour, Haase is not without a chance to win this matchup. He has a strong serve and plays quality tennis when focused. He reached the semi-finals of the Canadian Open last year in Montreal and will rely on his variety more than anything else against today’s opponent. Juan Martin del Potro has not had much success in Toronto or Montreal since reaching the final in 2009. However, if he is on top of his game, Haase will lose. The Argentinian has a deadly forehand and a tremendously improved backhand, which has been turned from weakness to strength following his wrist surgeries.
