Jorge Martin discharged from hospital – return journey not yet possible

Motorcycle world champion Jorge Martin left the hospital in Doha on Sunday but must remain in Qatar for the time being following his serious crash

MotoGP world champion Jorge Martin has been discharged from hospital following his serious crash at the Qatar Grand Prix. His Aprilia team announced on Sunday that Martin had left Hamad General Hospital in Doha but would remain in Qatar for the time being.

“He will remain in Qatar until his condition stabilizes,” an official statement said. “As soon as possible, he will be flown back to Europe under medical supervision.”

Martin broke eleven ribs and suffered a lung injury (pneumothorax) in the accident in Losail. The crash was particularly violent because he was hit by Fabio Di Giannantonio, who later described it as the “worst scene” of his career.

Return flight with caution: injury complicates transport

The fact that Martin was able to leave the hospital earlier than expected is a positive sign, but the situation remains delicate. Due to his injuries, he is unable to take a regular scheduled flight, so a medically supervised return flight must be organized.

According to the latest information, the Spaniard is expected to be out of action for several weeks, possibly up to three months. The Qatar GP was his first race of the new season after Martin had already been injured in preseason testing.

Espargaro comeback for Honda in Jerez

In addition to the positive news surrounding Martin, there is also news from the Honda camp: Aleix Espargaro will line up as a wildcard rider for the factory team at the upcoming Grand Prix in Jerez. It will be his first race since retiring as a regular rider for Aprilia at the end of 2024.

The Spaniard has been working as a test rider for Honda since the beginning of the year and will join Joan Mir and Luca Marini in the factory team line-up for the home race in Spain. The Jerez circuit is traditionally considered a Honda-friendly track, making it a good place to evaluate the further development of the RC213V in race conditions.
