Four-time NASCAR champion Jeff Gordon, who actually retired, returns to the cockpit for a racing appearance on an unusual stage
Surprise on the entry list for the Porsche Carrera Cup North America race on the first weekend of September (2 to 4 September) on the infield circuit of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway! One of the more than 30 Porsche 911 GT3 Cup cars entered will be driven by Jeff Gordon.
Gordon, who officially retired from the NASCAR Cup Series at the end of 2015 after 23 years before adding eight races there in 2016, has only competed in one race since: the 2017 24 Hours of Daytona, which he won with Jordan Taylor, Ricky Taylor and Max Angelelli.
Now, five and a half years later, Gordon returns to the cockpit once more for the Indianapolis weekend of the Porsche Carrera Cup North America, which is on the calendar immediately before Labor Day (5 September). And on this occasion there will be another comeback. The 911 driven by Gordon will be driven by Ray Evernham.
In the 1990s, Gordon had shaken up the NASCAR scene with Evernham as his crew chief in the 24 Hendrick Chevrolet and won three of his four titles. The fourth title came in the 2001 season with Robbie Loomis as crew chief.
“I’m looking forward to getting back in a race car and competing in a field of talented teams and drivers,” said Gordon, whose Porsche will “of course” wear the No. 24 on the Indianapolis circuit.
“It’s always special when I get the chance to race at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Ray [Evernham] and I have always talked about doing another race together at some point. We felt like Indy was the perfect place to do it. It will be a great way to spend the holiday weekend and make some new memories. “
