The British Open starts today at Carnoustie but the stars of the future were making names for themselves at St. Andrews this week in the Junior Open. New Zealand’s Jayden Ford finished third, behind South African Martin Vorster and Tsubasa Kajitani of Japan.
At 14, Ford was playing against players older than him, as the Junior Open includes golfers up to 16 years old. As well as finishing third in the prestigious tournament, he got to meet Jordan Spieth and managed to grab a selfie with him!
Switching to spectating for a few days
Now he will be swapping from playing to being a spectator for a few days, as he joins the masses of people heading to Carnoustie for the British Open golf action. Ford is a well-known golfer in New Zealand, having stormed into the game as a 12-year old beating some of the country’s best players to finish third in qualifying for the New Zealand Amateur in 2016.
The future certainly looks bright for the young golfer and the mix of nationalities doing well in the Junior Open looks promising in the hope that the dominance of American players can be halted in the future. America has such a strong crop of golfers right now, so to see New Zealand, Japan and South Africa bringing good players through the ranks is great for the sport.
Jayden Ford will be backing his fellow New Zealanders, Ryan Fox and Mike Hendry at Carnoustie, in the hope that his great week can get even better with a win from one of those guys.
