Ons Jabeur was only able to enjoy her tennis triumph in Berlin for a short time. On her way to the grass-court classic at Wimbledon, the Tunisian has a very special appearance coming up this week in Eastbourne, England.
“Now I have to focus on what I have to do in doubles,” Jabeur said with a twinkle in her eye. Tennis superstar Serena Williams is making her much-anticipated comeback after a year’s break alongside the 27-year-old before the American then seeks her 24th Grand Slam singles title at Wimbledon (June 27-July 10).
“I can’t wait,” Jabeur said on Sunday night. “I’m very happy she chose me, it’s unbelievable. I still can’t believe it.” Jabeur’s Berlin final win after Olympic champion Belinda Bencic of Switzerland retired pushed her to world number three in singles, while in doubles she celebrated her last win so far a year ago.
The contact for the joint mission in Eastbourne came about through the coaches, both had spoken to each other before, and Jabeur had trained with Serena’s sister Venus occasionally in the past. In Eastbourne, Jabeur will also compete in the singles. “But the focus is on doubles now,” she joked.
