Juan Izquierdo, who collapsed in the last 16 of the Copa Liberatores on Thursday, is in stable condition
Juan Izquierdo collapsed on the pitch on Thursday towards the end of his club Nacional Montevideo’s round of 16 match against Sao Paulo FC (0:2). The 27-year-old was given initial medical treatment by paramedics who rushed to the pitch at the Morumbi stadium and was then taken to the Albert Einstein Hospital.
Izquierdo still in intensive care
As it turned out, the collapse was the result of cardiac arrhythmia. According to a statement from his club, Izquierdo is in a stable condition and the defender continues to be monitored in intensive care.
The game, which the Brazilians won thanks to goals from Damian Bobadilla (32) and Jonathan Calleri (48), was completed despite the incident. There was initially no information on Izquierdo’s condition after the final whistle, with neither the coach nor the Nacional players commenting at the press conference or in the interview zone.
Suarez sends get-well wishes
Izquierdo received get-well wishes from the Uruguay national team, among others, and Luis Suarez also sent him a message.
